Usually because the pigment sits deeper than intended, was applied densely or repeatedly, or contains stable compounds — often titanium dioxide or iron oxides — that the skin cannot break down on its own. "Semi-permanent" describes the intention, not a guarantee.
The "18 months" myth
Microblading is widely sold as fading within one to three years. Sometimes it does. But depth, density, technique and pigment chemistry vary enormously — work placed a fraction too deep, layered across multiple touch-ups, or mixed with stable white or warm pigments can hold for many years, fading only into a discoloured version of itself.
